Joanne Duncan, State Member for Macedon, has congratulated Macedon Primary School, Romsey Primary School and Darrawweit Primary School for their achievements in  the Victorian School Garden Awards.

These schools will each receive a $200 prize for the Achievement Award.

Additionally, Darraweit Guim Primary School is one of nine schools across Victoria to receive $4,000 from the Turf Growers Association of Victoria.

“The awards recognise the collective effort students, teachers and families have made to make their school a better place to be,” Ms Duncan said.

“Creating a vibrant school garden provides a valuable outdoor learning experience for students and can also build on a sense of pride in the school and its grounds.”

“Students and teachers from the Macedon Ranges schools should be congratulated for putting fresh and innovative ideas into action given the challenges we face due to climate change and water shortage”.

Victorian School Garden Awards encourage schools to develop and use their gardens effectively and involves students in projects where they can share a learning experience and develop new skills.

The winners were announced recently at Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens, where 1500 students gathered to accept awards on behalf of their school.

Ms Duncan said schools had responded well to the challenges posed by a warmer climate and the need to conserve water.

Gardens were assessed on improvements made to the school environment through an active involvement of pupils, teachers and the school community.
